Seventeen Candles - Maverick is a 1997 off-track Thoroughbred. He is a grandson of Triple Crown winner Seattle Slew. Maverick had a very successful racing career, at the age of 2 he was named Texas Horse of the Year, and as a three year old he was nominated to run in the Kentucky Derby. After retiring from the track at the age of 6, Rachel received Maverick as a Christmas gift from her parents and trainer Shari Patterson.
Under the instruction of Shari Patterson, Rachel and Maverick trained in both hunter-jumpers and dressage. They competed all across Arizona up to second level dressage and jumping up to 3'6” in competition, and up to 4'6” in training.
Maverick is now training at fourth level, and is also a lesson horse for Sunny Weather Dressage. He is very well-mannered under saddle and is able to be ridden by anyone from beginners to competitive riders.
